Babywearing Voices: Alyce Mostert
Nov 11, 2024Alyce’s journey into babywearing began out of necessity. With two children close in age and a stressful postpartum period, Alyce discovered that babywearing was essential for navigating daily life. Initially skeptical about the investment, she was introduced to various carriers at a babywearing meet, sparking a newfound passion. Alyce’s curiosity turned into expertise as she delved deeper into babywearing, eventually becoming an educator and committee member of her local babywearing group in Western Australia.
As her enthusiasm grew, Alyce joined forces with an Australian business called Baby Mumma, which provided an opportunity to educate and sell both cloth diapers and baby carriers. However, Alyce’s focus was always drawn toward carriers, even while she juggled the complexities of her growing family and business. When Baby Mumma’s business structure shifted, Alyce was given the opportunity to take ownership of the Western Australia market and rebrand it as her own—Cloth and Carry.
While initially she sold both baby carriers and cloth diapers, over the years Alyce increasingly felt motivated to transition away from cloth diapering - which was a daunting prospect.
“I needed someone that knew something about babywearing and about running a business to mentor me,” Alyce explained. This is when she reached out to Joanna from CBWS, seeking private coaching. Joanna saw the potential and also suggested Alyce join The Working Group, a supportive business development group for babywearing professionals.
Participating in The Working Group proved transformative for Alyce. The connections and insights she gained from other professionals helped her solidify her goals and shift her mindset around business challenges. The accountability of The Working Group and private coaching sessions with Joanna gave Alyce the push she needed to transition away from the cloth diapering section of her business and focus fully on her true passion—baby carriers.
“I was really scattered when I started the sessions,” Alyce shared. “But the accountability was helpful, even if I didn’t necessarily do all the things I said I was going to do. I did at least one of the six things I thought I would, and I still had people to cheer me on for the things I had achieved.”
This guidance and community support were crucial in making tough decisions. Alyce had to let go of her cloth diaper inventory, which meant selling products at a loss. Despite the financial hit, the shift allowed her to clear mental and physical space, redirecting her energy toward what mattered most.
Today, Cloth and Carry is thriving. In just eight months, Alyce surpassed her entire sales budget for the previous year, and in one month alone, she matched five months of her prior year’s sales. This growth happened while balancing a full-time job, a testament to Alyce’s dedication and strategic direction.
Reflecting on her success, Alyce attributes much of her growth to her time in The Working Group and Joanna’s coaching. “I needed people who understood where I was at,” she said. Alyce found not only mentorship but also a community of professionals who helped her gain confidence, focus, and a new level of self-awareness in managing her business.
Despite her busy schedule, Alyce acknowledges the importance of self-care—a lesson she’s still working on. With the help of her husband, who manages much of the household responsibilities, and a supportive circle of friends encouraging her to take breaks, Alyce continues to evolve in both her business and personal life.
For Alyce, participating in The Working Group and private coaching was more than just business development—it was a journey of transformation and empowerment.
